Top 5 games my family is obsessed with right now

It’s getting colder out, so I prefer staying inside where it’s warm and cozy during the winter months. And what is one of the best ways to pass the time inside with family? Games!

I loved playing board games and card games when I was young, and now as an adult, it is still one of my favorite things to do. Before I had children, I always envisioned someday having family game nights with pizza, popcorn, and hour-long battles of Monopoly; however, the traditional games of the past aren’t necessarily ones that get kids excited today. While some classics DO hold up today, I knew that if I wanted to get my two rambunctious, tech-obsessed boys excited about board games instead of a device, I had to find the right ones.

Here are the top 5 games my family loves playing right now:

5. Pokemon Labyrinth

Is your son or daughter obsessed with Pokemon like mine is? Pokemon Labyrinth is such a fun game for kids, as well as adults! Game play involves shifting through the maze by moving the tiles and trying to get to the characters on your cards while blocking your opponents. It requires strategic thinking and planning ahead for the move on your upcoming turn. The box says ages 10+, but my 6-year-old son can grasp the concept pretty well. The fun Pokemon theme is sure to please all your little fans!

4. Wordle

The addicting online game/app is now a board game! Same concept as before, but players take turns choosing words for the others to guess, and then they place the green or yellow pieces onto the correct letters. My eleven-year-old son and I love trying to stump each other!

3. Sequence

Sequence is a mixture of a board game and a card game, and it includes strategic thinking and decision-making. The concept is easy enough for children, but still entertaining and challenging for adults. All of my friends and their children are truly obsessed with this game, too. Hours of fun for the whole family!

2. Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza

This card game is adorable and so much fun for all ages! You take turns laying a card from your deck and repeating “taco, cat, goat, cheese, pizza”, and as soon as there is a match between a card and a spoken word, everyone races to slap their hand on the card pile. The last one to slap has to take all the cards. There are also other cards like “gorilla” where you have to beat your chest before you slap the pile and “narwhal” where you have to clap your hands above your head like a horn before you slap the pile. Your mind definitely plays tricks on you in this fast-paced game, which is part of the fun! And there are tons of variations of this card game, like a Christmas-themed one called “Santa Cookie Elf Candy Snowman”. Highly recommend!

1. Sleeping Queens

And the number one favorite game for the whole family is the card game Sleeping Queens. My family (grandparents included!) can literally play this for hours without getting sick of it. It has cute cards like the “pancake queen” and the “turtle king”, and the object is to get the most points by picking and/or stealing the queen cards. The great thing about this game is there’s no real skill involved, so everyone has equal chances to win. This makes everyone want to keep playing to see if they’ll win the next round. I cannot recommend this game enough!

I’ll be honest, in order to pry my kids’ fingers away from the tablet or gaming console, I sometimes bribe them to play with me (maybe with treats or a fun excursion in the near future). Because what I found out was that once I had them at the kitchen table playing, they’ll usually end up laughing and having a fun time, which is all you can really ask for. And in today’s world, watching endless YouTube videos or playing Fortnite against random strangers cannot compare to the interaction of a family game. Quality family time is key!
